Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry Option (Non-Teaching), B.S.

This curriculum is designed for those students who wish to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or a professional degree in medicine or pharmacy or work as laboratory chemists.


To provide:

  1. A thorough knowledge of chemical principles and phenomena for Chemistry majors or minors.
  2. The necessary course work, content, and laboratory experience to adequately prepare students for graduate or professional schools;
  3. The necessary course work, content, and laboratory experience to prepare students for careers as professional chemists;
  4. An introduction to modern chemical laboratory methods and instrumentation; and
  5. Opportunity for students to engage in chemical research or other self-directed projects.


Mathematics requirements for a chemistry degree include Calculus I and II ( MATH 2510  and MATH 2520 ). Students entering without the proper background in mathematics (a minimum score of 20 in the mathematics section of the ACT and grades of B or better in Algebra II, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus in High School) will be required to take * CHEM 1330 - General Chemistry I Lecture (ACTS 1414)  and * CHEM 1340 - General Chemistry II Lecture (ACTS CHEM 1424)  before beginning calculus.

Physics requirements are University Physics I and II ( PHYS 3110 , PHYS 3310 , PHYS 3120  and PHYS 3320 ). These courses have a calculus prerequisite. At least six semester hours of computer science courses must be taken. CPSC 2322 - Special Topics/Visual Basic  must be included among these hours.

Biology requirements are BIOL 1455 - Principles of Biology (ACTS BIOL 1014)  and one other 4 credit course that is above BIOL 1455 .

At least six hours of a foreign language must be taken.
